C1: Double Vision

For our first capsule, we turn our eyes to the concept of Double Vision: also known as diplopia and a symptom of anxiety.

We define anxiety as the emotional response to a fear. Some fears are rational, while others are irrational. Looking at the latter, we explore the mismatch between perception — what we think is real — and reality — what is actually real.

Two years in the making, Double Vision takes inspiration from the distortions and reflections of water; and 2020's dualistic connection to time and vision.

Referencing a family heirloom pocket watch from 1896, an iconic Berlin landmark, the world's ugliest plant, and a striking painting from 1893, every detail is analyzed with the clearest of vision: 20/20 vision.

Elevating typical streetwear aesthetics:

Pocket Watch by Goce Ilievski
Inspired by country, family, and science.

Obsessed with dualism, the opportunity couldn't be passed up to analyze the dualistic relationship that time and vision share with 2020, 20:20, and 20/20.

While 2020 and 20:20 belong to the realm of time, the concept of 20/20 vision and the commonplace saying 'hindsight is 20/20' refers to 'normal vision' although used paradoxically for this capsule.

Sundial by Goce Ilievski
Inspired by surviving the harshest of environments and an optimistic outlook on the future.

Whenever anxious, we at times may view the world through a darker lens.
[perception ≠ reality]

Oberbaumbrücke by Sebastian Fritsche
The iconic connecting point to former East and West Berlin, the Oberbaumbrücke, references the dualistic nature of the city and the mismatch between perception and reality.

10% of all profits from the Oberbaum Sweatshirt and La Solitude T-shirt will be donated to foundations or organisations specialized in mental health awareness and recovery.

La Solitude by Alexander Harrison
A 2017 trip to Paris created an instant connection with this painting, which can be found in the Musée d'Orsay. It represents the time one must spend with oneself to understand and overcome fears.

Faces

Designed by Martyna Wieliczko [@martynamakes], a friend and illustrator/designer based in London; her work focuses on the mundane parts of life and mental health.

This artwork is featured on a postcard size paper included with any purchase of the Oberbaum Sweatshirt and La Solitude T-shirt.

Whether happy, sad or anything in between; all of our changing faces can mask our feelings of anxiousness — be they temporary or long-lasting. We oftentimes internalize our emotions to meet a singular perception of reality — a reality that won’t burden others if asked about how we feel.

How it's made

This design is printed on recycled 250 g/m² A6-size recycled white paper at We Make It, a local Berlin-based design studio specializing in Risography.

RISO printing is one of the most sustainable ways of printing: it doesn't produce any air pollutants like toner-based printers; uses leftover rice bran oil for ink; and uses an incredibly low amount of energy, about 90% less than a traditional printer.

This is just another way we simultaneously integrate environmentally conscious processes and support local businesses. Find out more about our efforts here.

Organizations we support

In our daily lives with one another, we sometimes strive to present one reality. We, often as not, do not want to burden others with our inner struggle.

Suppressing our anxieties is not healthy.
Let’s talk about it.

If you or a loved one could use an attentive ear, to listen to what’s going on in your life — big or small — please reach out to friends and family, or contact one of the following organizations for professional support:

Portraits

Photographed by Katharina Alba, we were able to capture shots before and after the conversations to study the emotional affect talking about anxiety had. The result: nervous or neutral turned into expressions of joy or relaxation.

Anxiety is not singular — it can be experienced by anybody and be temporary or long-lasting. In some cultures it is often talked about, in others not at all.

We sat down with friends and family to have a conversation about their experience with anxiety, to better understand how to be there for them, and to gain insight in the varying levels and kinds of anxiety.
